Things to do in New Orleans
By Louise Brennan
Earlier this year I flew direct with Delta Airlines to the Iconic New Orleans. If you haven’t been before, I highly suggest you do. I fell in love with the atmosphere of the place and the food was to die for!
Location
My hotel couldn’t have been in a better location. The Cambria New Orleans Warehouse District Hotel is only a 30-minute drive from the airport and a 20-minute walk from the French Quarter. It also boasts an on-site restaurant, hotel bar and fitness centre.
What I Loved
There was so much to love about this New Orleans holiday, but I think my highlight would have to be the Jazz River Cruise on board the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen. We set sail down the Mississippi River and spent the day on board admiring the views and enjoying the full bar service and buffet on board. I felt like I was in a movie as the sun began to set while I was listening to the Jazz band on the top deck.
Activities and Places to See
- There’s so much to see in this exciting city so I would recommend the New Orleans Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour.
- Sing your heart out at Kajuns Pub, the Karaoke here is great fun.
- Are you brave enough to hear some New Orleans’s folklore on a Ghost Tour? The city is considered one of the most haunted in America!
- Hear the stories of 4 generations of Creole woman at the Laura plantation.
- Spot alligators and more on board a Cajun Pride Swamp Tour, this privately-owned company takes you on an educational journey through New Orleans swamplands.
Food & Bars
The city has a great buzz, especially around Bourbon Street and Frenchmen Street. If you’re looking for some quite Jazz, the Royal Sonesta Hotel is a great spot, the food here is also great.
Have a glass of wine in the Bayou Wine & Beer Gardens. This property has a bridge connecting the beer garden to the wine garden. So, whether you’re looking for a beer and a burger or wine and cheese, this place can cater to you. Finally, you must sip on a cocktail at the Pontchartrain Hotel while admiring the best views of the city from the rooftop.
New Orleans has often been described as the most unique city in America, I certainly agree. The place has an electric atmosphere, the food is the die for and the people as so welcoming. The best time to visit is between February & May, when the weather is comfortable, and the Mardi Gras celebrations are in full swing. Although if you would rather avoid the hustle and bustle, I recommend visiting in December or January. To be honest, there is never a bad time to visit this incredible city.
